USS Safeguard (ARS 50)
The only forward deployed rescue and salvage ship, USS Safeguard (ARS 50), steams off the coast of Kyushu Island. Safeguard, along with USS La Jolla (SSN 701), and the Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle Mystic are the U.S. Navy participants in Exercise Pacific Reach 2002. Pacific Reach is an exercise hosted by the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) designed to improve submarine rescue capabilities. Members of the United States, Japan, Australian, Republic of Korea and Republic of Singapore navies are participating in the exercise with observers from Indonesia, United Kingdom, Canada, Chile, France, China and India. USS Safeguard (ARS 50)

USS Safeguard (ARS 50)
The rescue and salvage ship USS Safeguard (ARS 50) makes her way through the Java Sea en route to Surabaya, Indonesia for the fourth phase of the 2005 Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) exercise. Safeguard is part of a three-ship task group, including the dock landing ship USS Harpers Ferry (LSD 49) and guided missile frigate USS Rodney M. Davis (FFG 60) that will take part in CARAT Indonesia beginning July 25.
