ARM Papaloapan (P-411)
The Mexican Navy amphibious ship Papaloapan (P-411) sits off the coast of Mississippi preparing to assist with Hurricane Katrina relief efforts along the Gulf Coast. The Mexican and Dutch Navy, have sent ships to augment joint U.S. military forces in the area. The Navy's involvement in the humanitarian assistance operation is being lead by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in conjunction with the Department of Defense. A demolition charge detonates 1,500 meters from the Avenger-class mine countermeasures ship USS Scout (MCM 8). The charge was built and detonated by Sailors assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit (EODMU) 1 and Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit (MDSU) 2, attached to Combined Task Group 56.1, during joint mine countermeasures training. BAP Arica (SS-36)
The Peruvian submarine BAP (Buque Armada Peruana) Arica (SS-36) and its sailors begin their journey home from Naval Base Point Loma with tug assistance by Navy Region Southwest. Arica was participating in the Diesel Electric Submarine Initiative with the U.S. Navy. Arica acted as the primary opposing submarine force for the USS Nimitz Carrier Strike Group's Composite Unit Training Exercise and Joint Task Force Exercise. They also conducted training with more than 40 helicopters and patrol aircraft during the Helicopter Maritime Strike Weapons School Pacific's Antisubmarine Warfare Exercise.
